No matter how much society changes Christmas,  and how commercialized it is, the original story of Christmas will still prevail.   Christians will always celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus and non Christians will always see Christmas as a good excuse for a holiday and a get together with family and friends to exchange gifts.

My Son's First Photo With Santa - I Love This Photo, Still Makes Me Laugh

I personally have a love hate relationship with Christmas. I love the thought of getting together with family and sharing delicious food and wonderful gifts which  have been carefully chosen, but I hate how commercialised Christmas has become and the need to spend more and more each year on presents to ‘keep up with the Jone’s’.  The feeling of dread you get when Christmas is looming and you haven’t started your shopping or preparing your menu puts you in a state of panic, instead of the whole experience being fun and relaxed.  The endless Christmas parties and end of year gatherings and performances for each child also just adds extra strain to the whole holiday season.

It is only the second week of November, and already Santa is making his rounds in shopping centers and asking little children what they want for Christmas.  Parents feel pressured into getting their kids the latest gadgets so they aren’t feeling left behind with their peers and people look at you with pity if you tell them what you have got your kids for Christmas.

Bring Back the True Story of Christmas

I vote for bringing back the fun and relaxed nature of Christmas. Each child gets one small gift instead of 30 which they have become accustomed too, each person makes an effort to bring a special part of them to the day.  Bring back the spirit, love and tradition of Christmas where the food is specially prepared and we all sit down together to eat the Christmas Turkey.

I wonder how many kids know the real story about Christmas?

  2. Hi Jackie,
I know what you mean about having a love/hate relationship with Christmas. Your thoughts on bringing back a more traditional Christmas sound good to me, but I’m not sure how achievable they are in the short term.

  3. I fully agree – Christmas should be “scaled back” from a very much commercial event to a true get together and family affair. It’s about love an relationship, not about the biggest present.

    Hi Jackie,
I agree bring back that we get 1 small gift, the traditional Christmas was more relaxed and I think one gift was more treasured that number children get today.

    Hi Jackie,

I so get what you are saying…I would love to bring back the real christmas – where everyone is happy to spend quality time with each other, and no one expects huge presents!! I so want to give this year, give with time/sharing/love/laughter/hugs….wonder when it became about spending money, instead of spending time with love ones?
    Cheers

  9. Hi Lisa,
Yes if only everyone would be happy with the time we spend with loved ones instead of the presents we receive it would certainly take a lot of financial burden of families.

  10. Hi Renee

Christmas certainly is about love and relationship.

  11. Hi Jan

Your right, I think we have started a new Christmas tradition of outdoing last years presents every year. Too many nice things out there which we all would like.

Love the photo, the little fellow looks so impressed. I agree Christmas has got out of hand. It is just one mad rush and you hardly have time to enjoy.
